Sony has released detailed specifications for the PS5 M.2 SSD expansion update, which will be available to purchase later this year. The new upgrade includes a 1TB M.2 SSD with read speeds of up to 3200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1800 MB/s, as well as USB Type-C connectors.
The ps5 expansion ssd is an update that Sony has released for the PlayStation 5. This update will allow users to use a M.2 SSD as their primary storage device and install games directly onto it without having to use the disc drive.

Sony has released a support website that explains how PlayStation 5 users may upgrade their system with an M.2 SSD. The implication is that one of the system’s most eagerly awaited features will be introduced very soon, perhaps as part of the next upgrade to the PS5 system software beta program. Users interested in updating their storage should search for PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD drives ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB with M.2 types 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110, according to Sony’s support website. A heat sink should be included with the M.2 SSD to keep temperatures under control. A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver is all that is required in terms of tools.

Capacity ranges from 250GB to 4TB.
Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console necessitates the use of a cooling structure, such as a heatsink, to effectively dissipate heat. You may use either a single-sided or double-sided format to connect one to your M.2 SSD. M.2 SSDs with built-in cooling structures (such as heatsinks) are also available.
Sequential read speed should be at least 5,500MB/s.
Module width: 22mm (a width of 25mm is not supported).
M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 are M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. These figures may be found on retail M.2 SSD device listings. The width is represented by the first two numbers, while the length is represented by the remaining digits.
Socket 3 is the kind of socket (Key M)
The total size of the cooling structure is:
less than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm in millimeters (H). less than 4.33in (L) x 0.984in (W) x 0.442in (H) in inches (H).
Length
PS5 consoles support the following M.2 SSD lengths: 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm (corresponding to the form factor type, per above).
Width
A M.2 SSD module with a width of 22mm is needed. The entire construction (including a cooling structure) can’t be more than 25mm thick (0.984in).
Height
The M.2 SSD and its cooling structure (such as a heatsink) must have a total height of less than 11.25mm, whether built-in or separate (0.442in). In respect to the circuit board of the M.2 SSD, the height must also be correct:
- Below the board, the size must be smaller than 2.45mm (0.096in).
- Above the board, the overall dimension must be less than 8mm (0.314in).
(It’s worth noting that millimeter measures are the industry norm and are more accurate than inches.) Before you buy, double-check that the overall dimensions of the M.2 SSD and heatsink items you’re thinking about match the millimeter criteria.)
M.2 SSD storage may be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media applications, after it is installed in the PS5 system. This enables you to expand the amount of storage space on your PS5 console. You may easily transfer games between the PS5 console’s storage, a USB extended storage device attached to it, and the M.2 SSD storage.
