A new set of CPUs has been released by AMD, the Ryzen 5 series. This is a direct competitor to Intel’s i5 line of processors and it aims to offer more performance for less money. The two models are the baseline equivalent of their respective lines with one being clocked at 3.6GHz base clock speed while the other runs at 4GHz base clock speed on its four cores/eight threads respectively – both have 12MB cache memory per core as well as 16 lanes PCI Express 3rd Gen support
The “ryzen 5 5600x vs ryzen 5 3600x reddit” is a comparison of the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X. The review will discuss the performance of these two CPUs, as well as their features and specifications.
Introduction
Today, we’ll evaluate the performance of the AMD 3600X Ryzen 5 Matisse and AMD 5600X Ryzen 5 Vermeer CPUs. In the standard mid-range performance sector for CPUs, this is a head-to-head comparison of Zen 2 against Zen 3, 6-core to 6-core CPUs. We’ll see whether switching from the Ryzen 5 3600X to the newer Ryzen 5 5600X, generation to generation, is actually worth it. Consider this our AMD Ryzen 5 5600X review.
In a prior comparison, we compared the Ryzen 5 3600 to the Ryzen 5 3600X to evaluate how much performance the “X” at the end of the CPU contributed. Now we’re going a step further and comparing the CPU-to-CPU equivalents of the Zen 2 and Zen 3 generations to determine what the advantage of switching to the newer Zen 3 architecture is.
This is the second part of our examination at Ryzen 5000 series CPU performance in 2021, which began with our Ryzen 7 3700X vs. Ryzen 7 5800X comparison. Today’s evaluation is a “versus” style of comparison, pitting the Ryzen 5 3600X against the Ryzen 5 5600X.
Specs for AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
The AMD Ryzen 3000 series, which is based on Zen 2, was introduced in the summer and autumn of 2019. In the summer to autumn of 2020, AMD announced the Ryzen 5000 series, which is based on Zen 3. The Ryzen 5 3600X was released in 2019 with an MSRP of $249, making it a solid mainstream processor. AMD released the Ryzen 5 5600X in 2020, with a higher $299 MSRP. Is the $50 price difference worth the performance boost? AMD clearly believes so, since pricing for Zen 3 CPUs have risen compared to the prior generation.
Today, we’ll look at the performance of the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and compare it to the Ryzen 5 3600X. The Ryzen 5 5600X CPU is based on AMD’s newer Zen 3 architecture, which replaces the Zen 2 architecture that was used in the Ryzen 5 3600X. This entails reorganizing the CCDs and CCX complexes inside the package in order to improve cache performance. Please see the whole AMD Press Deck for Zen 3 for a detailed explanation of the Zen 3 architecture.

The Ryzen 5 5600X is a 6 core CPU with SMT, which means it can handle 12 threads, making it a 6c/12t CPU. It’s based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and made using TSMC’s 7nm process. It features an L2 cache of 3MB and an L3 cache of 32MB. It has one CCD and one IOD. With a TDP of 65W, the base frequency is 3.7GHz and the maximum boost frequency is 4.6GHz (the presentation slide above has the wrong TDP listed).
The Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 5 3600X are both based on the AMD AM4 socket technology and seem to be similar. The CPUs are identical in size and z-height, and you wouldn’t be able to tell them differently if it weren’t for the wording.
The TDP, on the other hand, differs. The TDP of the Ryzen 5 3600X is 95W, whereas the TDP of the new Ryzen 5 5600X is 65W. Given that the Ryzen 5 5600X can turbo higher than the Ryzen 5 3600X at 4.6GHz against 4.4GHz, this is a significant power savings. Although the 5600X’s base frequency is 100MHz lower, the boost clock is 200MHz and the TDP is lower. This might imply you won’t need as much of a powerful cooler as the 3600X would, saving you some money on the setup.
Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) capability, which can be activated in the BIOS as an overclocking approach raising boost clocks by up to 200MHz, is another feature of the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. Since our overclocking results, we’ll use PBO on the Ryzen 5 5600X enabled in our BIOS, as this is the CPU’s approved overclocking technique. These are the “PBO” findings that you’ll see on our graphs.
Precision Boost Overdrive is still supported and implemented in the AMD Ryzen 3000 Series CPUs as intended. PPT, TDC, and EDC restrictions are increased automatically to meet the VRM capabilities indicated by the BIOS settings of the individual motherboard. Workloads that could be throttled by current or socket power might keep rising until another limiter kicks in. The AutoOC function allows users to override boost by up to 200MHz.
